Most of us have experienced some emotional or physical trauma in our lives. In an often subconscious effort not to feel the pain, we curtail our beathing to feel better in the moment. However, those feelings do not go away, but result in tension in the body: a lack of ease which can result in impairing our experience of life and eventually turn into dis-ease. Breathing into those old hurts and pains allows that energy to be felt, expressed and transformed, resulting in a sense of increased freedom and joy in the ebb and flow of our lives.
If we are willing to forgive ourselves and others and at the same time breathe with and through emotions of judgement, guilt and criticism, old knots of negative emotions can lose their grip on us. When we take the time to breathe deeply and fully, and to exhale the stale, deoxygenated air that remains too long in our lungs, we can induce a calming state of relaxation. This relaxation can further help us to explore memories and traumas that may go back as far as childhood, and by doing so, help ourselves to heal. Breathwork can help us to gain control over our emotional lives, and lead us back to our authentic selves.
"The breathing helped me past my depression and into a deeper spiritual experience." — A.P.
